Personality:

Ratchet calls himself an old medic, and really, he could be farther from the truth. While he may be an old pile of bolts, he still shines in more ways than one. Within his rough exterior, there is a tender spark within the Autobot. This can be noted within canon, when he first came to earth, all the way to the end of the series and in the movie. At first, he despised human technology, often becoming frustrated with it. That was until three kids came along to change his outlook on humans as a whole. Ratchet didn’t appreciate little beings running around at his feet, with the possibility of one of them going ‘squish’. But as time progressed, Ratchet started to take note of how smart and strong these little life forms were becoming. And in time, he took them in as teammates and even family.

Upon meeting Ratchet, almost anyone would be hit with an overwhelming first impression of his gruff exterior. He is an introverted type of cybertronian, preferring to hide behind a “tough facade” rather than openly express himself or his interests. However well he tries to hide them, it’s pretty clear that he finds excitement in new formulas (such as Synthetic energon) and other science-based practices, including helping humans with their science projects. In fact, when he took over the children's projects, whom of which were the only humans who knew of the Autobots at the time, he wanted to do all the work himself, even going so far ushering the children out and tell them to leave it up to him. When he’s engrossed in something, such as that science project or any other personal/team-related project, he dismisses others around him, wanting to concentrate on the matter at hand.

Clearly, he is very smart, but because his smarts are relied on more than his fighting abilities, he rarely gets to see the battle field. However, when he does, he can certainly deal damage to his opponents and can fight like any other warrior class. However, he is primarily a medic, aiding his teammates whenever they are injured. He tries his best to heal them, but when he can’t fix an injury or solve a problem, the grief/guilt and sense of failure sticks with him for a long time. This is apparent as to when Bumble Bee lost his voice box. Ratchet was not able to retrieve a new one for him when Megatron had ripped it out of the poor scout. While Ratchet couldn't fix his voice box, he did his best to help the young Autobot recover. This event was never really discussed between Ratchet and Bumblebee, only until their human friends brought it up in passing. Ratchet was depended upon, in order to correct matters in which dealt with medical procedures. The medic was known as being the 'smart one' Seeing as he couldn't repair Bee's voicebox, it took a toll on the old bot's pride, seeing as how he could not repair the part, or even make a replacement for it.

Though he’s a valuable ally for his smarts and abilities, the most important of his attributes is his loyalty. While he might be a grump, he does go above and beyond for his team (AKA the people who have earned his loyalty). When things look dark for the Autobots (especially when faced with Decepticon hoards), he uses his abilities to come up with the most effective solution. His teammates would often approach situations with brawns and brute tactics. Ratchet, on the other hand would analyze situations, before jumping into action. Furthermore, he would never leave one of the Autobots behind in the middle of a critical situation. He fought in a war long before he arrived on Earth; long story short, he lost more than a fair share of teammates. Ratchet couldn't let that happen here again on Earth or anywhere else for that matter. Even when he was on Megatron’s ship, working for him to revive Cybertron (and thus seeming like he switched alliances), he aimed to sabotage the Decepticons' attempts to take over Earth. His loyalty is engraved into his spark, and said loyalty is to the Autobots and to the safety of Earth.

However, when it comes to new people, loyalty isn’t instantaneous; it takes a lot of time to build up this old bot’s trust. He has a small family for a reason: he explicitly relies on each and every one of them, just like they do in return with his medical expertise. Ratchet is an excellent fighter, but his age still takes its toll on the old autobot. He's bound to take a misstep in combat, which is where his teammates rush to his side. While he may get along with people in his own field, he prefers to work alone. He knows he can trust himself (thus he knows his team is in good hands), though it’s a challenge for him to put their lives and well-being on the shoulders of a “newbie”, however “fit” for the job they are. He was very apprehensive to let the human children, who later became their friends, tamper with their Cybertronian technology.

As stated previously, Ratchet is a very irritable and introverted cybertronian. It’s no surprise that his temper can get the best of him. He is very quick to judge individuals, which was heavily apparent when he first met humans. Ratchet only saw them as a nuisance at first, and often pushed them away whenever they wanted to help Ratchet with their own human technology. When pushed to the edge with annoyances from his teammates and others, he will often snap without much warning. Whenever Bumblebee would chatter at him, before his voice box was fixed, he would snap at the young bot for bothering him with his infernal 'beeps' and 'boops'. Other times, his words are harsh, enough that they could strike a chord or two within virtually anyone. His temper can put a strain on his teammates. Ratchet could be seen as the 'mother hen' of the group, always worrying about the well-being of his team. The medic tries to set up boundaries for his fellow Autobots on his team. Then again, he finds that his teammates would disobey his restrictions.

However, anger issues aren’t his only weak point: in his passion to find the best solution for a critical situation, he often becomes reckless, putting his own life -and subsequently, the lives of others- at risk. An excellent example of this is when he tried to test Synthetic Energon on himself. Synthetic Energon is a handmade source of Energon. This source is renewable, while regular Energon is a non-renewable resource for the Cybertronians. At a time, his team was running low on Energon, their life source. With supplies quickly dwindling, he had to think of some other solution, which was when he turned to "Synthen". The formula was incomplete at the time, but even knowing the risks associated with that, he injected it into his own body. Shortly thereafter, he felt a difference within his systems performance; it boosted his self-confidence, irritability, and overall physical abilities. However, the power he gained from the Synthen went straight to his head. He became so overconfident that he even tried to take on Megatron on his own. In the end, the encounter left him on the ground, Synthetic Energon spilled about him. Though he started off had great intentions (using himself as a guinea pig for the sake of his “family”), a little bit goes a long way and his reckless determination ended up making matters worse instead of better.

That said, he isn’t always playing the role of mad scientist. Sometimes, his intellectual side is much more subdued, professional, and work-oriented. Ratchet’s thirst for knowledge is far and wide, especially if information could benefit his team in any shape or form. An excellent example of this would be seen in how he took on the Synthetic Energon formula himself. Originally, it was an ancient formula. It was almost nearly recorded to completion. Sadly, it never came to fruition, and Ratchet had to complete the formula on his own. It’s no mystery that he’s incredibly intelligent, especially within the Autobot team. In fact, he dedicates most of his time in the lab, working on projects. As stated before, he was able to work on Synthen. Originally, this formula was incomplete and one he had gotten from an ancient source, long lost. Near the end of the series, he was captured forced to finish the formula under gunpoint. Under pressure, Ratchet was able to complete it with the aid of the advanced laboratory the Decepticons had. While not the ideal conditions for his work, it no less shows exactly what he’s capable of. However, he didn’t need to be put in hot water to create new innovations and knowledge building. He created science projects for the human children on his own accord. Granted, it was probably his only chance to show off his intellect towards the humans, and their teachers.

Crotchety, snippy, quick to judge, old, and opinionated, Ratchet has made quite the shell for himself. But inside, this innovative and loyal Autobot has a heart of gold. Sure, he has his downfalls, but his goodness will always come through; he might save your life one day.

Items on your character at canon point:

He's just coming with the metal on his back. His whole being pretty much. I suppose you could include his health/healing scanner and his knives/guns he uses in battle. These are innate weapons he can make appear, to assist him in battle.

For the scanner, perhaps it could only find current ailments on certain robots only? Essentially it can tell if parts are missing from a Cybertronian or a part is damaged or malfunctioning within one. But it wouldn't have the ability to heal anyone obviously. It's totally up to you guys!

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:

Alternate Mode (innate ability)
Being a Cybertronian Autobot, he has the ability to take on a vehicle mode, which is an ambulance. He acquired this form when he took residence on Earth. It is fast and makes for a quick getaway for him.

Medical and science knowledge
Ratchet knows a lot about Cybertronian biology as well as the science behind most Cybertronian devices and anomalies. He’ll find himself usually engrossed in one of these two fields most of the time.

His medical knowledge is mostly limited to cybertronians. He has learned a few things about humans and how they work as well, thanks to Jack's mother who is a nurse. He learned how fragile humans were, especially when Raf, a young boy, was infected by dark energon. But he has only scraped the surface of human biology. With other robots, he could possibly with their medical needs. Ratchet is familiar with machines and creates his own machinery when he feels it's needed for his practices.

With this knowledge, he is very experienced with it. However, there are always new things in which rear their ugly heads in these two fields that could leave him stumped. That's where he may need to depend on the aid of other bots, after every resource has been exhausted.

Fighting abilities
Having been in the civil war on his home planet of Cybertron, Ratchet also has the ability to fight. There would have been many times when Decepticon forces would try and take out some of the medics, in order to weaken the Autobots forces. Often times, he can be seen fighting with large knifes, similar to scalpels, that appear when they take place of his hands.

Prose Log Sample:

He just had to get a few minerals from the lake. Luckily, there were some sturdy rock formations that lead into the lake. Ratchet took it upon himself to start researching about what kind of minerals in which could be found on this strange land. While it was on Earth, it wasn't a place he was familiar with.

The mech took in a deep vented 'breath' before he shakily stepped out onto one rock formation. One step. Then another. He smiled a little as he started to gain his footing with confidence. He maneuvered towards the furthest rock, away from shore, and kneeled down. Reaching behind him. Ratchet managed to get his hand inside his pack, to fish out a vial from within it.

Perhaps there was something within this lake in which he could use. Maybe something which could help him recreate the Synthen formula. The Cybertronians in this area were running low on Energon as it was. While the idea of having Decepticons nearby - who could snatch up the formula easily by injuring an Autobot - was unsettling, survival was most important right now. Just being able to carry on for another day--

Ratchet's optic's widened as he felt the rock underneath him suddenly give way. With his body already being crouched down, his weight was focused behind him.

He fell back into the water with a choked surprised cry. Which was muffled soon afterwards by water.

When Ratchet reopened his optics, he could see the dim light of the moon shining down at him, highlighting the lakebed beneath him. It was a few hundred feet down at least. And he was traveling down slowly. While he may have been made of metal, most of it was hollow, especially up by his shoulders.

But something rumbled within the water. Sound waves rippling past his body. A roar.

His spark sank into the pit of his chest as his body swished and twisted within the water, trying to find the source of the sound. It sounded like a low groan. And he still had not reached the bottom of the lake yet.

Finally, his optics caught sight of something just a few yards away. A large black shape within the murky water. And. Ratchet squinted. Were those, teeth? Whatever it was, Ratchet scrambled within the water. The medic swung his arms within the water, almost awkwardly. His mind scrambled to remember as to where the closest shoreline was.

Another groan, and it shook him to the very core, causing his vision to become doubled for a brief moment. Whatever this thing was, it was four times bigger than Megatron, and he was of an intimidating size as is.

Ratchet grunted, fighting with his weight and limbs to propel himself through the water. In all honesty, he had not gotten very far, going downward at a steep angle. He gritted his teeth and worked with both his hands and feet to get himself through the water as fast as he can. If he can just to to the ground faster, or to shore, he could get out of reach of whatever this was. He had never seen anything quite like it. And it was only it's silhouette! Primus, he couldn't do anything in this state! he was a sitting duck!

Suddenly, something hard struck him across the back of the head, swimming overhead. The medic was stunned by the action, but it struck hard enough to cause him to black out.

Eventually sinking to the bottom of the lake.
